Former Toolbox striker Jeremie Aliadiere says Arsene Wenger only had two crises during his time at the club.
Wenger wasn’t known for his outbursts like his competitor at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, who had a credibility for giving his gamers the ‘ hairdryer treatment’.
Nevertheless, Wenger did lose it at Arsenal on a number of occasions, with Aliadiere– who remained in the senior squad for 6 years– remembering two events in particular.
FEATURE: Premier League XIs: An oddly strong O-Team.
The very first was when they discovered themselves tracking 5-1 to Man Utd at half-time at Old Trafford in February 2001, with the Gunners requiring a win to keep their slim title hopes alive.
” Arsene went absolutely mental,” Aliadiere informed Goal. “We got smashed in that very first half when Igor Stepanovs was playing at the back. It was a joke. Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke were absolutely eliminating us.
” I wasn’t even in the squad, I was just there as 19 th man or something. And when I saw him losing it like that I was like: ‘Wow!’. I ‘d never ever seen him going that crazy before.
” He was tossing bottles throughout the room, they were going all over. He was shouting and swearing– and Wenger never ever generally swore. He was just going absolutely psychological.
” He wasn’t doing it at anyone in specific due to the fact that he didn’t want to start point fingers, but he was simply going nuts for about five minutes prior to he began to calm down a bit.”.
On the 2nd event Wenger lost his cool his anger was directed at one Toolbox player throughout a fight at the club’s London Colney training ground.
” It was Sylvain Wiltord,” Aliadiere exposed.
” We ‘d been told not to use our mobile phones in the dressing room. Arsene always stated you had 2 options with your phone, leave it in your automobile, or if you bring it into the dressing room you put it on silent and leave it in your locker.
” So one day he enters the dressing space and starts having a meeting, talking with all the gamers and after that suddenly Sylvain’s phone begins to ring so loud and he answered the phone as well.
” Arsene simply absolutely lost it. He went crazy and yelled: ‘Sylvain are you taking the piss?!’ He began properly screaming at him and fined him 10 or 12 grand there and then.
” But it was at the time when there was a little stress with Sylvain and Wenger and Sylvain definitely didn’t care, he simply carried on his conversation on the phone. It was insane.”.
Aliadiere continued: “Those are the only two times I actually saw Arsene lose his mood.
” Normally, even when we ‘d had bad games, he would take some time to not respond in the wrong way. He constantly tried to provide himself time to cool off and believe more plainly before talking to the gamers.”.
